2012 Online Submission Guidelines

Lover’s mandate: to aid women in the ongoing discovery of their sexuality

A Lover is only as good as its’ partners, and we wanna to do it with the best! We are seeking pitches and submissions that are funny, sexy, smart, thought provoking, well worded, and well researched. Every article should be rooted in an original and innovative idea that excites readers. In our effort to empower women, Lover does not publish sexual violence stories, and instead, Lover looks forward to discovery, intrigue and fun. Lover is a volunteer run magazine and unable to compensate for work at this time. We welcome you to submit for the lover of it. Here are our submission guidelines:

  • Submit a query no longer than a paragraph that will convey the idea, angle and approach as well as the section your submission is intended for. Include your email address, phone, full name and pen name if applicable.Note: We cannot publish work without knowing where it came from, but we can assure you discretion and anonymity if desired. Please use a pen name that will pass for a real name i.e. using a first and last name.
  • Include writing samples relevant to your pitch if you are submitting a feature.
  • Submissions can be sent to dainty@lovermagazine.ca, in the body of the email or attached as a word document in 12 point Times New Roman font, single-spaced. Writing sample attached as separate word documents only.
  • Use Canadian spellings where appropriate (i.e. favour, colour, etc)
  • No phone calls, please.

Writing Rules of Thumb

  • Writing has to be in line with lover’s mandate: to aid women in the ongoing discovery of their sexuality.
  • Timeless interest, not something time sensitive that won’t be pertinent in near future
  • Well researched
  • Write with the understanding that women are intelligent but may not know about the subject matter you are writing of; so educate the educated.

Note that lover does not accept:

  • Poetry
  • Editorial or images promoting cosmetic surgery or unrealistic images of the human body
  • Editorial or images that include any non-consenting party, be that female or male for any reason

BLOGGERS
The lover blog includes:
Lover-at-Large- Lover on the streets and in the community, what we’re doing and what we’re seeing. From paint on a wall to beautifully orchestrated events and the thoughts of mere mortals, lover covers.
Profiles- Artists, Activists, Educators
If you see a work of art that gets your heart racing or mind blowing we want to show it to the world alongside the words of the creator. Have met, know or would like to know someone with words of enlightenment, inspiration of education? Lover has a standard question list that can be sent to anyone to then make a short profile to blog.

PERSONAL ESSAYS (up to 800 words) ideal for writers of all levels
First person narratives of real situations, experiences or emotions. The angle and idea is up to you, but readers should either be able to relate to your story on some meaningful level, or it should be unique and fascinating enough to pique their curiosity. Topics may include: knacks or ways you have communicated your needs to your partner, first orgasm or a private moment.
SEXUAL HEALTH
Immovable medical illustrations of the female sex organs and basic sex-ed
TV
Soon to launch interviews and series of the people that has knowledge on sexuality for women.

FAQ’S

Q: What is lover’s budget?
A: Lover doesn’t have a budget. Lover is a volunteer run magazine; we do it for the lover of it!

Q: Can I submit editorial that isn’t related to the upcoming theme?
A: Yes, Lover publishes content that isn’t theme related as well.

Q: Is Lover accepting interns?
A: Lover does not currently have an internship program set up. If you would like to contribute outside of the internship we would be welcome to accept suggestions.

Q: Can men contribute?
A: Yes, we want to understand & involve you in this process. There are a few categories you may submit to: personal essays for both print and online, self study exercises and blurbs, shorts and sidebars. You will be given anonymity if desired and have the platform to be honest with Lover. As long as your writing is in line with Lover, we want to see it. We do accept photo essays from men preferably if you involve at least one female in the creative process. This is important as the eye of a male and female differ in what turns us on and you will be shooting for the eye of a female on this occasion.
